What Are Implant Dentures?

Dental implants are small cylinders, or posts, which act as prosthetic tooth roots after they are surgically placed into the jawbone. They can serve as an incredibly strong base of support for prosthetic teeth, including crowns, bridges, and dentures.

There are two main types of implant dentures: fixed implant dentures and removable implant dentures. During your consultation, we can help you determine which option best fits your unique circumstances.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Sometimes called hybrid prosthesis, fixed implant dentures are permanently attached to the implants that support them. They should only be removed by a dental professional. Many patients enjoy the convenience of having their teeth in their mouth 24/7. The only drawback to this option is that it can require 6 or more implants in some cases, so it tends to require more jawbone density.

Removable Implant Dentures

Removable implant dentures require fewer posts than their fixed counterparts, so they are a popular treatment among individuals who have lost some bone density in their jaw. They snap onto and off of small attachments on top of the implants.

The Implant Denture Procedure

The implant denture procedure has four main steps, which we are able to perform right here in our office:

  • We will verify your candidacy for implant dentures and start planning your treatment.
  • Placement surgery. Your implants will be inserted at their pre-planned locations by our in-house oral surgeon.
  • Over a period of a few months, your implants will fuse with the surrounding bone tissue.
  • We will design and place your beautiful new set of teeth.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

You may be a suitable candidate for implant dentures if:

  • You are missing all or most of your teeth throughout one of your dental arches.
  • Your jawbone is healthy enough to support dental implants.
  • You are free of active oral infections.
  • You are well enough to undergo minor surgery.

Most adults with substantial tooth loss can qualify for implant dentures, either right away or after some preliminary care.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

Here are some of the most remarkable benefits of implant dentures:

  • They can provide a bite force that is almost equal to that of natural teeth. You should be able to eat virtually any food.
  • Dental implants often last for three decades or longer.
  • Jawbone preservation. Dental implants stimulate the jawbone and prevent the deterioration that normally occurs after tooth loss. This can preserve the shape of your face.
  • We carefully design implant dentures so they complement each patient’s unique face.
