How to Handle Common
Dental Emergencies
If you even think you have a dental emergency, the best thing you can do is give our dental office a call right away. By acting fast, you enable our team to schedule an appointment quickly and intervene before a problem becomes worse. Before you’re able to reach our dental office, there are a few things you can do on your own to take control during common dental emergencies.
Toothaches
Start by flossing and rinsing around the tooth, and if this doesn’t help, it’s OK to take an OTC medication. Often, the worst toothaches are due to a pulp infection, which we can take care of right away with root canal therapy. The procedure itself is virtually painless and can put a stop to the worst toothaches in a single appointment.
Chipped/Broken Tooth
Find as many pieces of the tooth that you can, and place them in a container to bring to our dental office. If the remaining tooth has a sharp edge, cover it with either some sugarless gum or a piece of dental wax. We’re usually able to repair broken teeth, but if the trauma is too extensive, we may recommend extracting and replacing it instead.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Ideally, you should head to our dental office within an hour of the incident to give us the best chance of putting the tooth back in place. You can stop any bleeding using some gauze and light pressure, and place the tooth under the tongue to keep it alive. It must stay wet so the sensitive tissues around the root stay viable.
Lost Filling/Crown
If you still have the restoration, try to temporarily place it back onto the tooth, securing it with either some sugarless gum or a dab of toothpaste. For completely lost crowns or fillings, try to avoid chewing with that part of your mouth until you can see us.
How to Prevent Dental Emergencies
- Always wear a mouthguard whenever you play sports.
- Don’t use your teeth to open packages or remove tags from clothing.
- Chew carefully when eating particularly hard, chewy, or sticky foods.
- Don’t chew on things that can wear down your enamel, such as ice, pens, pencils, fingernails, etc.
- Visit Anderson Dental Center at least twice a year for a checkup and cleaning—these allow us to spot minor problems before they can become big emergencies.
The Cost of Treating Dental Emergencies
Just like with medical emergencies, emergency dental treatment will always be different from patient to patient depending on the situation, and this will be reflected in the cost. To minimize the pain and expense of an urgent dental problem, acting fast is your best bet. This way, we can take care of the issue early using a more conservative method. Our dental office is in-network with many dental insurance plans and offers flexible financing as well, so we’re always able to work with patients to ensure their care is affordable.
