It might surprise you to learn that not all results from accidents or trauma. Here are 6 tips to help you avoid dental emergencies.

1. Brush and Floss Your Teeth

Preventable oral health problems are common culprits of dental emergencies, like tooth decay. Good oral hygiene will keep your mouth healthy. Brush your teeth for 2 minutes at least twice daily. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Don’t forget to floss every day to keep your gums healthy.

2. Watch What You Eat

Your teeth are incredibly strong, but they aren’t indestructible. Hard and chewy foods can weaken your teeth over time. It’s best to have them in moderation. Limit sugars and starches, which feed cavity-causing bacteria.

3. Break Any Bad Oral Habits

Various habits can land you in an emergency dentist’s chair, like crunching ice. It’s best to break any bad habits that can damage your teeth, like chewing on your fingernails. Keep inedible objects out of your mouth and don’t use your teeth in place of scissors or other tools.

4. Treat Grinding and Clenching

If you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, it can damage them over time. You can be at risk of enamel loss, breaks, fractures, and loose teeth. A nightguard provides a barrier between your upper and lower teeth to protect them from friction and pressure.

5. Wear an Athletic Mouthguard

Did you know that 15% of athletes will experience a dental injury? You can lessen your risk with the protection of an athletic mouthguard. It will protect your teeth and jaw if there’s trauma to your mouth. Research has shown that it can even lessen the severity of a concussion.

6. Visit Your Dentist

Untreated oral health issues can turn into big problems. A dental checkup every 6 months will ensure there isn’t anything concerning hiding in your mouth. Your dentist will provide the quick care you need to restore a healthy smile.

You can’t always stop dental emergencies from happening, but you can take several steps to lessen your risk. If anything unexpected occurs, contact your emergency dentist right away for treatment.
